Like many of you, I will never forget the first gun that my grandfather gave to me as a youth.
For me, it was a little single shot, breech-loading .410 shotgun.
This gun had been in Grandpa’s family for a long time, and I still remember opening the box on Christmas afternoon and looking in disbelief at the gun laying there.
I remember walking out behind the grain bins on Grandpa’s farm and firing that gun for the first time under his watchful eye.
I remember his stern instructions on how to safely handle and store a firearm – instructions that I now am passing down to my children.
When I was a little older, I remember hunting in Grandpa’s waterway with him, and getting my first pheasant with that .410.
I don’t know who was more proud – Grandpa or me.
That’s why I was dumbstruck when I read the latest proposal to come out of Des Moines. I had to read it twice to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.
Representative Bruce Hunter, along with the help of notorious anti-gunners like Rep. Mary Mascher and Rep. Ako Abdul-Samad, has introduced breath-taking legislation that would totally alter our way of life in Iowa.
(Representatives’ Mascher and Abdul-Samad, L and R, two of the co-sponsors of HF164, have a long history of attacking the 2nd Amendment.)
House File 164 would:
*** Make you a felon to give or sell a firearm to someone – even your own family – without going through a government background check. Yes, you read that right. You would be a FELON.
*** Put you in prison for up to two years for this offense. Two years in state prison for giving a firearm to your daughter when she leaves for college, two years for giving your wife a gun when you are out of town on business, two years for selling a gun to your best friend.
*** Make you pay over $6,000 worth of fines – in addition to your jail time.
*** Give the gun grabbers what they have always wanted – a list of every gun and gun owner in the state!
I can’t even fathom a state where my grandfather, or your grandfather, could be hauled off in handcuffs for passing along a family heirloom.
It’s vital that we take action right away!
Currently in Iowa you are allowed to sell and transfer firearms between family without government permission. In addition, you can sell long guns in Iowa without needing a “Mother May I” pass from the state.
That would all change now.
If passed, this language would set up a massive registry of gun owners in Iowa.
As history has shown us time and time again, gun registration is the required precursor to gun confiscation!
Dictators for hundreds of years have done this: get the citizens to register their guns, then outlaw the guns and confiscate the guns, and then wipe out entire masses of the population.
As I’m sure you’ll agree, that’s ultimately why we own firearms, as defense against a government that is out of control.
The anti-gunners are trying to use the recent mass shooting criminal actions as an excuse to RAM this sort of gun control down your throat. They are hoping that you feel so guilty as a gun owner that you will simply give up.
I’m here to tell you that with your help we will NEVER give up on our gun rights here in Iowa.
We will certainly never agree with this kind of insanity that makes my grandfather and all the other grandfathers in Iowa felons for simply passing along our proud Iowa heritage of gun ownership.
But we need your help to stop this.

Then please consider an emergency contribution to enable us to stop this legislation.
When I think of what it would mean to you and I if this bill were to become law I can hardly stomach it.
As a convicted felon you would lose ALL of your guns for life. You’d lose your right to self-defense. You’d lose your right to vote. Your entire life would be ruined.
