Current Iowa law makes it a crime for an Iowa age 18, 19, or 20 to purchase or possess a handgun. They are also not allowed to apply for a carry permit or a purchase permit. This legislation would change that and lower the current requirement of 21 down to 18.
18–20-year-olds can die for their country, can get married, can have a family, can pay taxes, can have a career…the idea that they can’t possess and carry a handgun is simply wrong.
But it’s more than that, it’s unconstitutional in light of the Bruen decision and the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals (which we are in) agreed with that in a decision just last year.
HF-924, sponsored by gun rights champion Steve Holt, would fix that by lowering the age to buy, possess, and carry a handgun to 18!
The bill has passed the Judiciary Committee 17-4 and could be voted on in the House any time leadership elects to take it up!
Take action! Send this PRE-WRITTEN EMAIL to your State Representative urging him/her to support this badly needed legislation to bring Iowa’s gun laws into compliance with the Constitution and to give younger Iowa’s the ability to defend themselves!
